JJJ: Not Dead After All

My old blog buddy John J Jay is still alive. After he suddenly stopped posting last fall, didn’t reply to any emails, and weeks went by, I gave him up for dead. I figured the old coot had gone on one last elk hunt up in the mountains and never came back.

But no, turns out he’s still with us. So I got to read 5 months worth of his short posts. We still agree on just about everything.

SpaceX sent a Falcon rocket soaring toward orbit Monday night with 11 small satellites, its first mission since an accident last summer. Then in an even more amazing feat, it landed the 15-story leftover booster back on Earth safely.

It was the first time an unmanned rocket returned to land vertically at Cape Canaveral, Florida, and represented a tremendous success for SpaceX. The company led by billionaire Elon Musk is striving for reusability to drive launch costs down and open up space to more people.

SpaceX employees broke into cheers and chants, some of them jumping up and down, following the smooth touchdown nine minutes after liftoff. Previous landing attempts ended in fiery blasts, but those aimed for an ocean platform.

“The Falcon has landed,” SpaceX TV commentators announced.

The top officer at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, noted that the returning booster “placed the exclamation mark on 2015.”

“This was a first for us at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and I can’t even begin to describe the excitement the team feels right now having been a part of this historic first-stage rocket landing,” Monteith said in a statement.

I think this one hits a solid 9.2 on the Cool-o-Meter, just for the elan of it all, and let’s give them an extra 0.3 for nailing the landing, on target, at night. So call it a 9.5, which is FREAKING OUTSTANDING.

I have no idea how much dead weight the booster recovery system adds, or what kind of performance bight that makes. But it looks like the central engine of it’s 9 engine cluster is reserved for retro-rocket duties (OMG, when is the last time you thought of “retro-rcokets”? 1973?), the body is steered back to earth using folding grid fins (the same kind as on the MOAB) and pop out triangular landing gear provides plenty of drag and comes with some massive shock absorbers.

SpaceX is not part of NASA at all, so in all likelihood, not a single Muslim was reached out to during this entire project. Hella yeah!

Now, how to build one as a flying kit? Let’s see, the legs are the important part ... if you replaced the pretend shocks from the old Estes Mars Lander with some real ones from those R/C dirt cars ... make it a mid-power model so it’s a good size to begin with ... use some kind of coil spring on the landing leg hinge, like the one on a mousetrap ... a little burn-through tube on the booster engines to release it ... inertial electronics to fire off the remote second stage ... you’d have to time things just so, and find the right engine to use in the center of a 3+1 cluster ... maybe a long burn C6 from SCR for the retro, after 3 D8s to get it up there? How to import BP rocket engines from Australia??  Ach, phooey, just use a small clear plastic parachute with a drogue hole. Leave the legs extended and they’ll probably act as fins. This one isn’t a high flier, it’s an upright lander. And with a fairly normal body design, it’s got to be easier to build than that fat flying mushroom old Vernon E used to sell.

heavyweight champ Tyson Fury falls victim to pc mob

We inhabit a world that is getting more and more difficult to understand.
The hard to understand part is, how on earth have ppl become so stupid?
It isn’t just the odd ball village idiot.

One group of mindless jump on any bandwagon where race is an issue, want a ball club to stop using “Redskins” as their name.  I don’t believe those jerks even know the origin of that term. I don’t think they’d care either.
That’s just one little group led by someone who claims to be an American Indian and I even doubt that.  No matter. That’s one idiot issue group among very many.
And they are raptly listened to by the media and can make noise out of all proportion to their numbers.

Over here on this side of the Atlantic pretty much the same sort of idiots get the same attention and their demands are immediately acted upon at the mere hint of race or race hate comments.  Race hate comments translate to “Race Crime”. 
And of course all sorts of “phobia” bullshit.
Ppl are no longer satisfied with voicing an opinion.  Oh no.  Where the left is concerned, punishments must follow quickly, the offender put in stocks and grovelling apologies must be made. They must be fired from jobs and if ever awarded anything then the award must be taken away.

I am certain that Mr. Trump will not miss for one moment, the loss of his “Business Ambassador for Scotland” title.  He might however miss some of the future business he has been doing with middle east business billionaires. 

That really is too long an intro but I get carried away.  And btw … this post isn’t about Donald Trump.

I caught something yesterday and started reading about a fellow named Tyson Fury.
Are many of you familiar with him and the current problem he finds himself in, all because ONE pathetic and ugly and creepy old queer, went to the Manchester Police and claimed a hate crime had been (allegedly) committed.  So this lonely old fairy, this miserable poof ends up on TV.

He called Greater Manchester Police on Tuesday after reading a report of what Fury said, and the force is now investigating his complaint.

Tyson Fury’s high crime deserving of the harshest public rebuke, is that he is pretty much a fundamentalist Christian.  He reads the bible and takes for granted that whatever it says in that book, has to be the last word.

In an interview, Fury said a number of things the politically correct public and especially feminists are angry about.
For example …. referring to his (gorgeous) wife.  He said women belong in the home taking care of kids and cleaning being domestic.  He also said “women’s best place is to be in the kitchen or on her back”.

OK … I can see how that last might not be taken too well by any female.
But you have to look at where this guy comes from.  His background is that of an Irish Traveler.

The guy he defeated in that last fight, had held the title for 11 years.

The idea that Fury should be punished for his stated beliefs is also abhorrent. Freedom of speech only to echo the established view on something, is not freedom of speech at all: freedom of speech means the freedom to offend those of a different view.

Tyson Fury is the first British boxer since Lennox Lewis to win the world heavyweight championship, is a manic character of natural intelligence (though completely uneducated) and highly articulate.

human interest ….

I’m not one for kiddie pix.  Too often I notice cringe worthy toe curling articles about something Jr. has done when Jr. has no idea himself.
But papers often like to publish cute but meaningless kiddie shots. So generally, I don’t follow kid stories for the sake of cute kids.
That said, once in awhile something does grab my short attention span, and this is one of them.

For Iris Grace Halmshaw, the world was a lonely place.

The autistic five-year-old struggles to speak, is unnerved by other children and is frequently thrown into panic by the world around her.

She fills her days with painting, and is so talented that her works sell for as much as £1,500.

But nothing could quite relieve her isolation. Until, that is, a cat called Thula came along.

The pair are now inseparable – and Iris’s parents credit the gentle Maine Coon with helping their little girl become more tactile and affectionate, as well as influencing her already much-acclaimed works of art.

The home-educated youngster has been producing astonishing Monet-style landscapes since she was three, when mother Arabella Carter-Johnson devised art sessions to help her with her daughter’s concentration and speech.

gladys cooper, one talented and beautiful english rose, born on this very date in 1888

EYE CANDY from another time.  Sure wish it could come back.

By the time I discovered her as a movie goer and later movies on tv, she was an older woman and often played someone’s auntie or the hard nosed strict head mistress of a school.  It always seemed to me that she was in every single movie ever made in the 1940s’ and a good part of the 50’s. She was a much in demand character actress, and quite believable in every role she played.  Still, she was not a household name but her face would have been familiar to many.  For fans of the Twilight Zone, if you recall the episode of an old woman frightened of death, who was played by Robert Redford, then you’ve seen her. 
Well, quite by accident, I was not looking for her and didn’t even know her name, I found a bunch of photos and was really surprised by what I found.
Am happy to share the treasure.

Biography
Widely acclaimed as one of the great beauties of the stage, British actress Gladys Cooper had the added advantage of great talent. Daughter of a London magazine editor, she made her stage bow at age 17 in a Colchester production of Bluebell in Fairyland; at 19, she was a member of the “Gaiety Girls,” a famous and famously attractive chorus-girl line. Graduating to leading roles, Cooper was particularly popular with young stage door johnnies; during World War I, she was the British troops’ most popular “pin-up.

.” Switching from light comedy to deep drama in the 1920s, Cooper retained her following, even when leaving England for extended American appearances after her 1934 Broadway debut in The Shining Hour. She made subsequent New York appearances in Shakespearean roles, thereafter achieving nationwide fame with her many Hollywood film appearances (she’d first acted before the cameras way back in 1911 in a British one-reeler, Eleventh Commandment).

Another Author Gone

Celebrated author Tom Clancy, who became famous for best-sellers like “The Hunt for Red October” and “Patriot Games,” died on Tuesday. He was 66.

Clancy died at Johns Hopkins Hospital after a brief illness, the Baltimore Sun reports.

David Shanks, an executive personally involved in publishing all of Clancy’s books, released a statement saying: ”I’m deeply saddened by Tom’s passing.  He was a consummate author, creating the modern-day thriller, and was one of the most visionary storytellers of our time. I will miss him dearly and he will be missed by tens of millions of readers worldwide.”

Born in Baltimore, Md., Clancy first hit the best-seller lists in 1984 with “The Hunt for Red October.” He sold the manuscript to the first publisher he tried, the Naval Institute Press, which had never bought original fiction.

By a stroke of luck, President Reagan got “Red October” as a Christmas gift and quipped at a dinner that he was losing sleep because he couldn’t put the book down, a statement Clancy later said helped put him on the New York Times best-seller list.

A string of successful books followed, including “Red Storm Rising,” “Patriot Games,” “The Cardinal of the Kremlin,” “Clear and Present Danger,” “The Sum of All Fears,” and “Without Remorse.”

Many of Clancy’s works were turned into blockbuster movies starring the likes of Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. The latest, based on his desk-jockey CIA hero Jack Ryan, is set for release later this year. Directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Pine, “Jack Ryan: Shadow One” is set for release in the U.S. on Christmas Day.

On Sir Terry Pratchett

It’s a pretty sad event but I am not aware if some of you, who know this guy, know about this.

He has been interviewed on radio and spoken in the newspaper interviews as well, on assisted suicide.

I wish the folks who produce videos would stop believing that every fucking thing they present to us, just god damn HAS to have music of any kind in the background.  And most especially draggy crap that sounds more like a funeral dirge which in this his case is still a mite premature.

He will in all likelihood go to Dignitas, unless he does it himself while he still can. 

If Dad wants to end his life, it’s his choice. I’ll support him

Rhianna Pratchett was in a taxi in a North London traffic jam when her father phoned. The date, she recalls, was December 6, 2007, and she thinks she was coming back from the gym.

The conversation which followed was so shocking that, five years on, it remains the most traumatic memory of her life.

Unknown to his only child, author Sir Terry Pratchett had just been having hospital tests after finding difficulty typing. ‘From the second I answered his call, the detail of everything I’d done that day — all the hours minutes and seconds preceding that conversation — have been wiped from my mind,’ says Rhianna, 36.

‘The whole thing is a bit of a blur. He’d been having tests, he said. It was a rare form which affects spatial awareness. “We’re putting out a Press release next week,” he said. “I wanted you to know beforehand.”

‘I went into shock. I’d had no idea anything was wrong. At that moment, the taxi driver turned and snapped at me — he was irritated the journey had got him stuck in a jam — and I burst into floods of tears and said: “My Dad’s just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.” The driver just shrugged.

‘I could hardly breathe. All I wanted to do was just get out of that car and back to my flat. I was flying to the U.S. the next day to work for two weeks and I remember telling Dad that I’d cancel it, but he told me there was no point. “There’s nothing you can do about it,” he said. “If you stay, it isn’t going to change anything.” ’

A week later, Sir Terry’s office released the Press statement, and his battle with Alzheimer’s, having been diagnosed at the age of 59, made headline news around the globe.

As the second-bestselling author in the UK (behind J.K. Rowling), Sir Terry has a cult following of millions. His fans reacted with genuine emotion — and many contacted Rhianna directly.

best wishes for the coming year to a great bunch of people. my final post of this year. cheers all.

Another year about to end.  There were trials and tribulations during the year, personal ones, but as this year ends I truly believe I have been one hell of a lucky fellow.

Yes, I end the year with gripes about inconsiderate neighbors, political correctness, and deep frustration at the world I see now.  On the other hand, I consider myself luckier than I deserve to be, and I am very well lucky in the friends I still have. 

I’m very fortunate that I happened along at a time when Mr. Christian, as he was called, invited me to join BMEWS as a blogger.  Good grief. That was scary and I almost ran for the hills.  But he gave me confidence that I could, and because of that I have met, on line, all of you.  And I am very thankful for that.  Thankful too that I’m not a libtard cos if I were, jeesh. Not one of you would speak to me.  Well, not in kind terms anyway.  You regulars that I have come to know here are pretty special folk.  I enjoy your comments, and some are funny even when you’re angry. 

Many of you are pretty darn good wordsmiths.  I don’t have your ability to use words the way I’d like to, but many of you do.  I appreciate good writing, which I think stems a lot from my association with song writers in Nashville.  Or anywhere else for that matter.  I’ve never been able to work out how or where the words come from.  If I could, I’d be doing it.  So instead I simply jot down here what I’m thinking at any given moment.  Sometimes that ain’t too good cos what I’m think might be nothing more than mushy thinking and I have to go back and edit my thinking. 

Can’t end the year without saying thanks to Vilmar, and the sharing of those photographs.  He says he isn’t a professional and maybe he isn’t.  He just creates photos that darn well are professional. 

A special friendship that must have its own paragraph is the one I enjoy with Drew.
Letters and emails and questions answered, and I will tell you, favors done by someone I never met personally and who had trust in me, whoa.  That isn’t easily come by.  I am not going to get all gooey and stupid here. I hate that kind of thing. But I just want to acknowledge publicly that he is a friend, and I owe him a lot.
So thanks Drew for the past year and the one before and here’s cheers for the one coming. 

I wish I had saved many of the comments made by so many of you for a years end post.  But I didn’t, and there isn’t enough time right now to go into the archives and dig.  I guess I left it too late.  Might be a project for next year though, if I make it that far.  Hey, ya never know.

I did a long winded rant on the subject, and CM came back with better in fewer words. The issue was treason and the left, if memory serves.

If they don’t fix it, they wont be able to:
Study why the fix caused problems
Hire more people to manage the fix
Hire people to fix the mistakes fixing the fix
Mount a study to plan for a better fix
Hire people to blame those who did the original fix
Train new people for the new tech that develops since then
Move everyone to a new project they can fix
...you know, like everything else they muck up....

how’s this for a do it yourself project?

Wow .... take a look at what this fellow has done.

Talk about a do it yourself project.  Brilliant.

It started with this.

An old (130 years) rail coach which wasn’t allowed to be moved. So, his ex FIL built a home around it and got this.

But apparently the coach his FIL bought needed lots of restoration and lots and lots of work. Which this man took on.

Mr Higgins is now restoring the former Great Western Railway carriage to possibly open to the public

When it comes to building a comfortable bungalow, Jim Higgins has got the inside track.

The retired transport manager, 60, has one of the most unique houses in Britain… because it is built around a real railway carriage.

The property in Ashton, Cornwall, is a fully functioning house but bizarrely has the fully restored 130-year-old Great Western Railway car within its walls.

Mr Higgins, 64, originally from Buckinghamshire took over the property from his former father-law Charles Allen who was forced to build it around the railway carriage because bizarre planning regulations meant the train could not be moved.

Mr Higgins said: ‘The railway carriage was lived in by a local woman Elizabeth Richards from 1930.

‘It was known as Lizzies Place to when she died in 1966.

‘It then stood empty for a number of years until my ex-father-in-law came down looking for somewhere to retire.

EYE CANDY LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE. YOU’RE WELCOME.

In no shape to be at a computer. not sick, but have a few aches to cope with. BUT

With an ice pack on my left neck and upper shoulder and ribs (I think it’s that) on the left that just won’t quit aching, and chair in a slight recline, I was reading one of our Sunday newspaper magazines.  LIVE, from The Daily Mail.

Not too easy keeping the small pack in place and pound a keyboard but when I saw this I just knew I couldn’t wait for Monday. It HAD to be today.

I LOVE this.  Believe it or not, there was a time, once upon a time, when I could have bought this and not missed a penny of it. That was before the tech bubble burst.  So when I see something like this it just makes my gut churn, my head spin and it’s another reminder where greed leads us. Darn. Being greedy and stupid sure has a high price tag.

To raise its height, you turn the ‘starter crank’, which drives a mechanism scaled up from old Winfield carburettor synchronisation quadrants. The drawer fronts use the same honeycomb grille as the Bugatti, and the aluminium undersides are based on the car’s oil sump, which is finned to aid cooling

The men who designed and built the Bugatti Type 35 racer of the Twenties approached their work with enthusiasm and panache.
Chaps who design desks aren’t necessarily known for that. But what if you made a desk the way Bugatti made the car?

Inspired by the Bugatti Type 35 racer and equipped with a set of its blueprints, Midlands furniture-maker Luzzo Bespoke spent 3,000 hours designing, machining, joining, riveting and polishing sheet aluminium into a workstation worth nearly as much as the car itself: a Type 35 goes for about $396,887, the desk costs $201,707

Tan leather finish (left); each desk is numbered, and the builders credited (centre); and drawers are locked with an ‘ignition key’ (right)
The racing-blue finish is actually seven layers of paint and lacquer and the tan leather writing area is based on a shade used in the car.
Oh yes, and the iMac slides out of sight at the touch of a button.
